Wedgwood Black on Cane Jasperware
A Wedgwood medallion in black on cane jasperware produced to commemorate William Wilberforce and the abolition of slavery 1833 embossed with the words 'AM I NOT A MAN AND A BROTHER ?'.
The medallion reproduces the decoration and wording of the slave medallion modelled in 1787 by Hackwood from the seal of the Slave Emancipation Society. Josiah Wedgwood was himself an active supporter of the Society and produced several hundreds of the medallion. Many of these medallions were made in black on white Jasper but other combinations such as this one were also produced.
The medallion measures approximately 30mm in diameter, is drilled through the top as shown and is impressed "Wedgwood Made in England" on the back.
The medallion has been previously owned and is first quality however, please note there are two tiny flea bites to the back as shown which do not detract but should be mentioned.
