Wedgwood Christmas 1969 - 1978
This first Decade Christmas plate was issued by Wedgwood in 1978 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the inauguration of their pale blue and white Jasper Christmas plate series. The 1969 Wedgwood Christmas plate was the first item to be made by an English ceramic company in commemoration of the Christian festival.
Each year the pale blue Jasper plate has been decorated with a white Jasper bas-relief of a famous landmark in or close to London: and the design has always incorporated an embossed date motif and relief border of holly leaves.
Issued in a limited edition of 10,000, the Decade Christmas plate (diameter 9.5 inches) is in Portland blue Jasper with finely modelled bas-relief ornaments in pale blue and white Jasper. Windsor Castle – the subject of the 1969 Christmas plate – is encircled by a gold commemorative inscription and a holly wreath in pale blue Jasper. Around the border are cameos of the nine landmarks featured on the Christmas plates for the years 1970 to 1978, framed by swags of holly.
The names of the landmarks are incorporated in a gold backstamp on the reverse of the plate. In order of annual issue they are: Windsor Castle, Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, St. Paul’s Cathedral, The Tower of London, The Houses of Parliament, Tower Bridge, Hampton Court, Westminster Abbey and Horse Guards in Whitehall.
The plate has been previously owned but is in very good condition.
